Millville Public Charter School welcomes first students and shines the spotlight
MILLVILLE — Last January, Gov. Chris Christie said it was “not acceptable that a child who is neglected in a New Jersey school must accept it because of a zip code.”
Last Tuesday, Christie’s remarks echoed to the Holly City as area youngsters bustled through the doors and into the fresh classrooms of the Millville Public Charter School.
The new public charter school focuses on academic excellence by utilizing small classes and wearing uniforms, while emphasizing components of theater arts, a cirriculum built on the success of the Vineland Public Charter School.
PUBLIC AND CHARTER TOGETHER
“Parents have two choices of where to send their child to school in the area,” said Dean of Students Esteban “Tito” Garcia. “ You have public school, or you have a parochial private school.”
The Millville Public Charter School is free for those parent seeking an alternative for their child.
“We run much like a public school,” Garcia explained. “Our teachers are certified, we meet all core testing standards, but our class sizes are smaller and our instructors can connect with students on a personal level, as opposed to a school with overcrowding.”
“We also require all students to wear school uniforms,” Garcia added. “It makes it easier for parents, and teaches students early on a lesson in appropriate professional business attire.”
Some of the other differences include 200 days of schooling in one year, which is 20 more than the required 180 days by the state of NJ.
Their school day is also slightly longer, running from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“We devote close to 45 to 50 minutes of more instructional time each day,” Garcia said. “With more instruction, we see better grades.”
Garcia’s experience with charter education dates back to 2009 when he and his wife, Dr. Ann Garcia, opened the Vineland Public Charter School for students in kindergarten through third grade.
