Why Rachelle Bronfman is a fan of ultimate fighting

Why would a 50-year-old well-known philanthropist and mother of three, who lives in Toronto’s upscale neighbourhood of Forest Hill, like to hang out at a sports bar to watch gruesome pay-per-view Ultimate Fighting Championship matches?

“I understand the technical part of it, so I can enjoy it,” says Rachelle Bronfman, relaxed and laughing gently at the improbability of the scene she often frequents. Today, she’s at Powerclub, a high-end fitness facility she opened 18 months ago in her neighbourhood. Dressed in casual black Lycra clothing on a weekday morning, her long hair worn loose, she is explaining her unexpected interest in the controversial popularity of mixed martial arts.

“If you’re sitting at home and just clicking through the channels and you come upon [UFC], it seems like the grossest thing,” she allows. “There’s blood everywhere and violence. But now that I know what’s going on, I look at the arm locks, the leg locks. When I look at two guys fighting, I can tell what martial arts they did … and it’s not about making the other guy unconscious. In martial arts, you’re looking to get the other person down on the ground, not just smash their head. You want them to tap out,” she says referring to the term used when a fighter submits to his opponent by tapping him or the mat.

A self-contained woman, she talks about the sport without drama, as if it were as commonplace as her desire to be a good mother. Her interest began about four years ago, when she hired a personal trainer, Erez Cohen, a five-time national judo champion in Israel who is now her business partner in Powerclub, to come to her home to help get her in shape. “I would always get bored with regular workouts at the clubs I joined,” says the recently divorced mother of three children, aged 16, 14 and 9. “I like to learn new things.”

Yoga, the fitness religion of her milieu, was never her thing. “I’m not a stay-still kind of person,” she says. Still, she never expected to love boxing. “When he brought over the gloves, my kids were, like, ‘What are doing? You’re our Mom!’ They thought it was pretty weird,” she adds with a chuckle. “But once I started doing boxing and kick-boxing, I loved it because it was more of a workout than you’d ever get on a treadmill or just doing sit-ups.
