Drenching downpours that fell almost non-stop Saturday and Sunday brought 8-12 inches of rain, creating a sudden surge in water levels on Central Florida lakes.
The impact is most visible on the Kissimmee Chain, from Lake Toho south to Lake Kissimmee and into the Kissimmee River toward Lake Okeechobee.
The South Florida Water Management District said Saturday was the wettest day in the upper and lower Kissimmee basins combined in almost 100 years.
Lake Kissimmee rose 18 inches by Monday afternoon and was going higher, the SFWMD said.
Leo Cosce at Camp Lester on the oxbow off the river channel to Lake Kissimmee said it rained close to 12 inches and raised the water level close to 20 inches.
"It's maybe the highest it's ever been in the 40 years I've been here,'' Cosce said Wednesday. "It's one of the highest highs I've ever seen.'' He said the lake was close to 54 feet above sea level.
At Camp Mack, adjacent to Camp Lester, water moccasins were on the grounds Tuesday and Wednesday.
Grace Hammers at Camp Mack said moccasins were on the move from the flooded island across the oxbow. Hammers said Wednesday afternoon that the water seemed to be leveling out, but boat docks at the camp had floated away and water was up to the top of the cement walkway.
Cosce said fishermen at his docks are stepping up into their boats now, whereas two weeks ago they were stepping down 2 feet. He said tops of pontoon boats at Kissimmee River Park and Marina were hitting the roofs of the boat slips.
