"NOT Bummer Summer" Part 4: Wilmington Children's Museum ...

Ironically, I find that writing about myself is an increasing challenge. Right now, I’m much more comfortable simply saying that I’m the mother of two boys, Ellis and Thayer, ages 12 and 8, respectively, and then shifting the conversation to them and their various achievements and interests. (I will, in fact, do exactly that over the next couple of weeks as I introduce myself and my family to the MomTalk community more fully.) Right now, I’m in the middle of the long tunnel of motherhood, too far to glimpse the young woman I once was, but not yet emerging into the light of the individual I’m to become once my waking hours aren’t filled with soccer games, karate tournaments, feigning interest in the latest video game achievements, and quizzing boys on state capitals, times tables, or weekly spelling words. In another life, I lived in the desert town of Tucson, where I was born, raised, and attended The University of Arizona, amassing such an eclectic blend of majors and minors that even I have to pause to remember them. The list shows my wide and varied interests, but it also reflects that my primary priority was to the children I dreamed one day of having. I studied sciences so that I could enjoy with them the wonders of the natural world and religions so that I might engender in them tolerance and understanding. Every class I took was to help make me a stronger mom. Graduate school I did for myself. I earned an MFA in Creative Writing just a few months after my first son was born. I went on to work as a freelance writer, editor, teacher, and writing consultant. During this time, I helped people put into words everything from a marriage proposal to a script for a PBS documentary. Whatever their dreams were, I helped forge them into written documents. I truly enjoyed this work and loved most that it enabled me to be home with my children. One day I hope that everything I’ve learned working with so many writers to find authentic voices and hammer thoughts into articulate, well-crafted compositions will also help me tell the stories that bubble up in my own mind, but again... that is a future not yet in view. Right now I am enjoying my sons before they are too cool to be seen with me, relishing married life (I am recently remarried), finding outlets for my artistic/creative energies at the school in which I work, and attempting to learn to surf as I embrace living on the coast of North Carolina. I’m glad to be here.
