The heat is on in China

The temperature is off the charts and so too are the facilities and hospitality.

A pair of locals soaked up all of the above as they prepare for Friday’s opening ceremonies at the 26th World University Games in southeastern China.

Canada has sent its largest contingent to these Games, a delegation of 246 athletes.

Also known as the International University Sports Federation’s (FISU) Games, this multi-sport event is second in size only to the Olympics.

Team Canada’s chef de mission Peter Baxter, a Waterloo resident and the athletic director at Wilfrid Laurier University, said Shenzhen’s 35 C heat and 99 percent humidity means he’ll get a jump on that diet he’s been meaning to start.

“I think the humidity which is sauna-like should get me back to my marathon-running weight. . . That is, if I stay out of the dining hall,” Baxter said.

“Gunna be sooooo stinking hot,” Laurier student and Canadian soccer team co-captain Alyssa Lagonia, of Kitchener, wrote in an email from the city of 10.5 million.

Joining Baxter and Lagonia in the smoldering Chinese heat are: WLU’s Kale Harrison, who will represent Canada in men’s basketball; communications officer Mike Whitehouse; and student journalist Justin Fauteux.

The University of Waterloo’s contingent includes: golfer Devon Rizzo, of Brantford; and golf coaches Dave Hollinger, of Waterloo, and Cambridge’s Carla Munch-Miranda.

Cambridge native Joren Zeeman, of Queen’s University, is participating in men’s volleyball.

Kitchener’s Alex Witmer, of the University of Toronto, will compete in high jump.

Former Laurier student Cam Wheelan, who transferred to UW this summer, will represent Canada in beach volleyball.

More than 8,000 athletes, from 150 countries, are to compete in the two-week event. Twenty-four sports will be contested.

From the deluxe, air-conditioned accommodations, to a wide variety of western and Asian food and nightly cultural shows, to the athletes’ internet café, everything is first-rate, Baxter said.

Farewell to Edmonton

&Nbsp;        I am a huge fan of changing the lyrics of songs so that they apply to my life. One night at Jimmy's, after rocking out to "Fifty Mission Cap" on the jukebox, I rewrote it so it was about my best friends' Vancouver Canucks cap. Good times. I also noticed there are a number of songs about Carolina and Louisiana, and those names rhyme with Irricana, so I automatically change those songs to be about my hometown. That one up there was my lame attempt at turning "Farewell to Nova Scotia" into my leaving Edmonton song. If I can come up with better lyrics, I will let you all know.          At first, I was a little skeptical about blogging. It always seemed to be a little pretentious in my eyes. But this class turned blogging into a fun writing experience, and though I am sure I will not have an audience, I want to keep writing it. My parents have suggested that I continue blogging when I go to Halifax next semester, and I think that will be a great way to document my Maritime adventures!         So classmates, and Edmonton in general, thanks for reading my naive, country girl observations of this exciting city. It's been an eye-opening semester, and I hope to continue looking for the adventures and stories Edmonton has to offer to an aspiring writer.
