BubbleDeck going in as La Bahn Arena progresses

Made up of concrete, steel and large plastic balls, the construction material will provide a strong, light, time-saving and environmentally-friendly product for the Arena.

Precast BubbleDeck is going in this week and early next week, which will allow, as early as Aug. 17, the pouring of concrete throughout the BubbleDeck to finish off the ceiling.

In other areas of the project, the foundations walls for the tunnel between the Kohl Center and La Bahn Arena are being backfilled. The first three levels of the elevator shaft have been poured at the hockey locker rooms, while the fourth and final level is on tap. Also, the foundations connecting the hockey locker room with the Arena are complete.

Excavation for the arena continues on the southwest side of the site and travels north as concrete footings and foundation walls go in along the west building line. Also installed were raker beams which will form the support for the actual bowl construction that will house the ice sheet.

The final power cut to Ogg Hall, the SERF, Kohl Center and other area buildings was done last weekend to tie the electrical switch gear vault all together after the electrical switches were moved to enable the construction of the arena. One obvious progression on the project is the pouring of a support pier for the connecting walkway between La Bahn Arena and the SERF. It looks like a "T" standing by itself south of the SERF.

Speaking of the SERF, installation of windows along the south side of SERF that allow natural light into the pool area continues, with seven of the windows now complete.

Answer by OldPilot Opinion: Only one design error. The designer responsible for the emergency cooling system under estimated the maximum height of a tsunami from an earthquake. Thus the seawall around the emergency generators was not high enough. The tsunami washed over the seawall and flooded the diesel engines, generators, pumps, switchgear and washed away the fuel for the diesels. Thus the electric and electronic equipment was ruined by sea water. The diesels were ruined by sea water and there was no fuel. Thus, no emergency power to drive the pumps needed for the cooling. All of this because the seawall was roughly a meter too low

The electrical power installation was not water-proofed. Oterwise when the flood waters retreated, the diesel generators could have been started and with them the cooling water pumps, too. At least part of the switchgear and the switchgear room most likely was flooded with sea water, shorting everything out. Maybe they even left the switchgear room doors open, or did not have any.

I even wonder if they had TEFC (totally enclosed forced cooling) motors, manual start overrides and God knows what else was missing. It was a major electrical installation safety blunder.

The rest was just a consequence of being unable to run the cooling water pumps. That is the achiles heel of any nuclear power plant.

They had battery power for a few hours, but that is not enough to keep the reactors cool. Obviously the damage to the diesel power installation was beyond repair.
