MMA fighter Diaz steps up for police

"We wanted to meet them, and the main reason was that we came to help raise funds to bring more Stockton PD downtown to keep everything safe," said Castillo.

There was a long line of people waiting at the warehouse on Saturday mornings Waterfront, and they paid an entrance fee of $ 10. There were additional charges for photos and other memorabilia. Downtown Stockton Alliance Marketing Director Emily Baim crowd estimated between 350 and 400 have participated, although it would not have an exact count until Monday.

Adrian Arreaga of Stockton said he was disappointed Nick Diaz wasn't at the event but figured he was preparing for his highly anticipated UFC welterweight championship fight against Georges St-Pierre on Oct. 29. He was correct in assuming the fighter had UFC business, according to Cesar Gracie, Nick and Nate Diaz's manager.

Gracie said Nick Diaz was in the Lake Tahoe area and was called out of town by UFC officials.

"Nick wanted to be here, and this came up late and he had to go," Gracie said. "Nate was still able to do it, and he was very happy to donate his time to a great charity."

Nate Diaz, 26, who won the reality show "Ultimate Fighter 5" in 2007 and has a 13-7 record, is scheduled to meet Takanori Gomi on Sept. 24. He signed autographs, chatted with fans and joked around with youngsters.

STOCKTON - Two days after a daytime gunfight at a waterfront restaurant and office building, a 26-year-old man was fatally stabbed in an early morning fight outside that same building.

Three suspects have been apprehended in the stabbing, which appears to have no connection with the shooting, other than the general location.

The Police Department said the victim of the stabbing, a 26-year-old man, was found at about 2 a.m. Saturday in the 500 block of Garfield Avenue, where officers had been dispatched on a report that a person there had been stabbed.

The victim, whose name police did not release, had been stabbed several times in his upper torso. He was taken to San Joaquin General Hospital and died shortly after arrival.

After investigating, police determined he had been driven to Garfield Avenue from the 500 block of West Weber Avenue, where a fight had started outside of Waterfront Warehouse, 445 W. Weber Ave.

Lt. Jim Pickens said the fight broke out among a crowd that had left Chitiva's Bar and Grill, inside Waterfront Warehouse. A 21-year-old woman had also been stabbed in her hand in that fight.

Dorjan Lyndell Daniels, 22, of Fontana and Djuane Nunley, 25, of Rancho Cordova were arrested Saturday afternoon on suspicion of murder, assault with a deadly weapon and being in a gang.

Police had been searching for Marcus McCliman, 25, of Loma Linda, but he turned himself in Saturday evening, police said.

Investigators were still working Saturday to clear up what happened.

"We're reviewing videotape and we've questioned several people," Pickens said.

On Thursday afternoon, two people eating lunch on the patio of Nena's Mexican Restaurant, near Chitiva's, were confronted by a group of men who walked through the outer fence. As the confrontation escalated, guns were drawn, and people scrambled for cover. The two groups exchanged gunfire inside Waterfront Warehouse, police have said. No one was injured, but some property was damaged.
