Environmentalists winning war to clear up St. Clair River

Congratulations to the many environmentalists on both sides of the border who worked so hard to get another objective accomplished in a goal to have the St. Clair River delisted as one of 43 areas of concerns in the Great Lakes Basin.

Last week, the St. Clair River Binational Public Advisory Council (BPAC) announced one of a dozen objectives -- removing the tainted taste and odour of wildlife -- had been accomplished. The group has been working since 1987 to clean up the river.

Organizers hit the nail on the head when triumphantly making the announcement Friday. They said the community has been legitimately pessimistic about trying to clean up the river.

Getting rid of the stigma of pollution problems from sewer systems and industry that still exists in the river will take a lot more than a press conference under the bridge, but nonetheless, it's an important first step in public education about the issue.

It is a tough label to shed when for decades the public has been bombarded with stories about spills from industry emptying into the St. Clair. Stories of the infamous chemical blob that resided on the bottom of the river also fueled hundreds of media reports.

But the reality is millions of dollars have been spent by the private sector and all levels of government on the cleanup of the river. Some key initiatives include municipal sewer separation in Sarnia and Port Huron, separating industrial processes from the river, and the removal of contaminants from the riverbed.

It's gratifying to know scientists, volunteers and First Nations representatives are working on other items that have made the St. Clair an area of concern. There are 11 other initiatives until the group can get the river delisted, but there is optimism this can be accomplished. We look forward to another status report shortly. With every announcement of an objective achieved, optimism for change will follow.

Efforts to clean up the St. Clair make a huge statement about cross-border co-operation. Water pollution knows no boundaries and we are all responsible for the cleanup of one of our greatest natural resources.
