Solar Cooking Demonstration Held in Charlottesville
Some people living in Charlottesville are getting back to the basics of cooking with some help from the sun.
More than a dozen people came out to a solar cooking demonstration on Nassau St. Saturday. The demonstration was hosted by Transition Charlottesville - Albemarle, a group dedicated to getting people to use less electricity, fossil fuels, and go green for the betterment of the environment and everyone's health.
The group cooked and then ate eggplant parmesan, black rice and brownies all prepared in an outdoor solar oven.
Laurie Delehanty of Transition Charlottesville - Albemarle said, "It saves energy. You're not using electricity, you're not using gasoline, you're not using any fuel except for the sun's energy. It does an excellent job of cooking food, it keeps your house cool, and it's a lot of fun."
This is a part of a series of workshops aimed at showing people how to live without dependence on electricity or fossil fuels.
The group plans to show off the solar oven at next month's Heritage Harvest Festival at Monticello.

Adjacent to the wood is a drinking water station that is solar-powered. We came back to the site, got the fire going and made pizzas using a nifty reflector oven I purchased for my trips to the BWCA. We later roasted marshmallows, talked,
It produces methane from household waste, which can then be used to fuel a gas cooker. “Since this digester was installed for me in my home, I have been able to save a lot of time, as I do not have to walk long distances to fetch firewood,” she said as
Try to avoid using your stove or oven during peak hours of the day since it will add to the heat inside the home. Ventilate your home at night and early morning by opening windows and doors to clear out the heat and allow cooler air to circulate.

The use of solar cookers is nothing new, people have done for decades. Settlers to modern times, solar cooking provides a renewable option for our kitchen.
Our power went out this week for about seven hours. There is a part of me that really enjoys when it does, because it brings our skills settlement to work, and exposes the deficiencies in our planning, like it or not.
What I’ve come more to terms with about using my oven/stove is that it isn’t just the appliance I’m addicted to , it’s the convenience .
If I choose to cook three times a day, I can walk right over and turn the oven on. Want some coffee in the middle of the afternoon? No problem, go turn on the stove.
In days of old, that sort of convenience wasn’t possible. In many cultures and time periods, the cooking is usually done once a day , maybe twice. Why? Frankly, it just wasn’t a good use of time to maintain a fire, other than perhaps a smolder, all day long.
Most cooking was done ONCE per day , then it was time to get on to other tasks.

Sometimes I like to imagine how I would plan that, to do all of my cooking once or twice a day. No more mid-day coffee, that’s for sure.
Modern day homesteading require a bit more planning and once again, as Americans, we love our convenience .
