Too many secret meetings: council slammed
A LOCAL Government report has taken Port Stephens Council to task for making too many decisions behind closed doors.In the report, not yet released but seen by the Examiner, a review of the workings of the council concludes that confidential sessions are used too frequently calling into question the transparency of the council.
The drafts findings by inspectors from the Division of Local Government (DLG) were referred to at the last council meeting in debate over the sale of council-owned land at Salamander Bay.
"The DLG made it abundantly clear to those of us who bothered to read the report that all matters of tendering should be discussed in open council unless there is some extraordinary reason not to," councillor Frank Ward said at the meeting.
"It appears we have been grossly mislead by the general manager (Peter Gesling)."
Mr Gesling has often told councillors discussion of and decisions on tenders should be held behind closed doors especially where commercial in confidence issues are involved.
Cr Ward said if the council had nothing to hide then everything should be discussed in open council.
Councillor Steve Tucker took his chance to have a dig at the report findings despite them still being in draft confidential form.
"How could you deal with this council now with all of the crap going on," he said at the meeting.
Deciding if an item is confidential, or not, begins with the general manager or an executive officer. If the item involves a tender price, buying or selling information or legal information it is put to a confidential meeting with decisions made public.
It will be some time before the DLG report is released and the council has a right of reply to the draft.
Mr Gesling would not comment on the report when contacted by the Examiner.
