It wasn't the computer I craved but people. Behind the screen were other nerds, happy to debate martial arts or culture wars. The PC had no psyche to goad my own. And this is true of all machines: they are unconcerned with human consciousness.

But how do we know it is a human typing or texting? Put more philosophically: In a machine age, what are the hallmarks of this bluebird, human consciousness?

Philosophy has a long history of answering this question with "reason". For example, numbers were sovereign for Plato: mathematical calculations "lead the mind towards truth" and allowed philosopher-kings to see the cosmic blueprint. But my MacBook can compute more quickly and correctly than the most gifted savant. And no one but Steve Jobs's disciples believes Apple's products are celestial.

As American science writer and poet Brian Christian argues in The Most Human Human, computers challenge our basic ideas of humankind. Importantly, he interprets this challenge with subtlety: less a duel to the death, more a friendly rivalry.

Christian's scholarly investigation has a practical side: his entry in the 2009 Loebner Prize, a version of the Turing test, was first proposed in a 1950 paper by mathematician Alan Turing to speculate on computer intelligence. The Loebner takes top artificial intelligence computer programs and four humans (called confederates) and gets them chatting online to the judges.

Contestants have five minutes to convince the judges they are human. Each is ranked on their "humanness". At the end, there are two prizes: the most human computer, and the most human human.

With his background in philosophy, computer science and poetry, Christian was determined to be the most human confederate, and he succeeded. To win, he capitalised on computers' weaknesses. For example, humans are talented at "good enough". Computers excel at perfect answers but their processes are abstract, timeless; they will compute until conclusion. Humans, adapted for a shifting, subtle environment, will sacrifice precision for timely decision.
