Safety, quality concerns land Upstate Medical and Oswego hospitals on report ...
Syracuse, N.Y. -- A high number of safety issues, complications and patient deaths has landed Upstate University Hospital and Oswego Hospital on a "watch list" compiled by a hospital quality research group.
They are among 20 state hospitals on the list included with the 2011 New York State Hospital Report Card released today by the Niagara Health Quality Coalition, an Amherst organization that has been publishing the report nine years. The full report is available on the group's website .
The report provides rates of patient deaths, safety problems such as infections, patient satisfaction and other quality indicators for more than 200 New York hospitals. It is based on 2009 billing and discharge information hospitals report to the state Health Department . The statistics were risk adjusted so that hospitals with sicker patients are compared fairly with other hospitals.
The new edition of the report for the first time puts the hospitals with a greater proportion of below-average results on the watch list. It also includes a list of what it considers the state's safest hospitals that had above-average results. No Central New York hospital is on the safest hospital list.
Bruce Boissonnault, Niagara's president and CEO, said patients should not become unduly alarmed if their hospital is on the watch list. "Patients should not think that just because they go to a watch list hospital they will get poor care," he said. "These are hospitals that have work to do and need to put systems in place to reduce human error."
Officials at Upstate and Oswego took issue with report and said its findings do not accurate reflect the quality of care provided at their hospitals.
Two Syracuse hospitals made the report card's honor roll for having better than average results in two categories. St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center was singled out for having a significantly lower than average mortality rate for pneumonia patients, while Upstate University Hospital at Community General was cited for having a lower than average rate of bloodstream infections after surgery.
