How to Enjoy Memphis, TN (part I) | news to day

Memphis is known for a lot of things like BBQ, soul music, Beale street, and of course Elvis Presley. Elvis is the undisputed King of Rock and Roll. His full name is Elvis Aaron Presley. He lived from 1935-1977, and his parents were Vernon Elvis Presley and Gladys Love Smith. His birthplace goes back to Tupelo, MS. As I write this article today is the last day of Elvis week. I drove by Graceland today and the people were planning a big party. You may have known a lot about Elvis, but most people learn something every year. For example, he was born an identical twin and his twin died which caused him to be the only child. His brother’s name was Jesse Garon. His family later moved to Memphis, TN. He went through a lot of embarrassment. He recorded his first song, “My Happiness” with Sun records in 1953 and the rest is history. He lived an extraordinary life, many movies, songs, humanitarian efforts, role model and a legacy that will never die. If you are ever in Memphis, you will undoubtedly see his likeness in some shape or form. The next place is probably the most visited street in Memphis. It’s name is Beale Street, which is the home to many blues, rock and roll, jazz, and rhythm and blues clubs. Beale street was formed in 1941 and it’s original name was Beale Avenue, not the same appeal. It is approximately 5 blocks from the World famous Mississippi river. The entrance to Beale street is the B.B. Kings club, owned by the famous blues singer himself. It is quite an experience to see the atmosphere of the club. They even have one of B.B. Kings old guitars in the club. The music choice is mostly blues, r and b, and even karoke on some nights. The food is excellent and the tourist seem to enjoy chilling with the Blues King. If you are really lucky, you might be there when B.B. visits the club himself. When in the downtown area, you have to visit the landmark Peabody Hotel and Shops. The Peabody, as it is commonly called, is home to restaurants, shops, arcades, novelty items, and a courtyard, which is decorated during Christmas with a huge tree. Visitors will be shown some of the best that Memphis has to offer and they just may witness some live entertainment. One of the best restaurants is the Texas de Brazil, which has fine cuisine. The Peabody has three levels and it offers a cool secure environment. The Courtyard is inviting, because it has benches sitting along a tranquil pond. Upstairs is home to Primetime entertainment. Primetime is a family oriented restaurant housing billiards, arcade games, virtual bowling, and carnival style games. You can definitely find something to appease the eyesight at the Peabody. I have one more place to talk about and that is where the Famous Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was killed. The Lorraine Motel, which was turned into the National Civil Rights Museum. M.L.K. done a lot of good deeds for all people in his life, he was the youngest person to ever win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. He was in Memphis to assist the public works employees in their struggles with the union. His name speaks for itself, he was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel on March 29, 1968. The nation was never the same without him and some argue he will never be replaced. If you ever visit Memphis, a vacation would not be complete without a tour guide of the museum. The cars he drove and the spot where he was killed are still pinpointed. It will give you chills just standing next to the place where he was gun down. You can even see the room where he stayed, in it’s preservation state. The tour takes approximately two hours, but it is well spent. As you can see the word King is mentioned several times, I don’t think that is by coincidence. Continue to look for my next two series, where I visit some other Memphis landmarks. I wish to hear about some other cities from other friends. Rock and Roll!!!
