STAYING positive has not always come naturally to Everton supporters throughout a difficult summer. But if those fans wanted an example of how it is possible, they need look no further than Louis Saha.
The affable Frenchman has had more than his fair share of misfortune on the field during his career, the latest of which came in March when an awkward fall against Fulham led to ankle surgery that curtailed his season and scuppered hopes of a recall for France.
Months of rehabilitation, much of which was spent back in his homeland, followed, with Saha having previously admitted his depth of despair was such that retirement crossed his mind.
Thankfully for Everton, though, the 33-year-old resisted. The niggles may continue – Saha has only been fit enough for the bench in the opening two games – but the striker is choosing only to look forward and not dwell on the past.
“It’s not a sense of making up for the time lost through injuries, because you have to say it is over in your mind,” says Saha, who will hope for involvement in today’s Premier League visit to Blackburn Rovers. “Injuries make me lose time, they make me lose trophies, they make me lose all the things I miss.
“But you can’t recover from that, you have to accept it. I am very positive, the main thing is you have to enjoy your work, and I do – I like it and I will be positive to the end.
“I am a goalscorer, and I aim to get the best out of my ability. That’s my aim, and I’m pretty confident in that. I am confident in the players I have got around me.”
With Everton’s financial plight meaning no new forward appears on the horizon for David Moyes ahead of Wednesday’s transfer deadline, Saha will be expected to shoulder the main goalscoring burden once again.
After a slow first half to the previous campaign, the Frenchman burst into life with nine goals in 11 games – including a landmark four-goal haul against Blackpool – before the injury jinx struck.
