Norwegian fjords cruise with magnificent views

Ever wondered what it would be like going on a cruise?

Until I set foot on the Holland-America Line cruise ship MS Ryndam, my knowledge of the cruise is due entirely to watch episodes of The Love Boat back in the eighties (I am ashamed of the admit), Hercule Poirot mysteries involving various murder at sea and many documentaries about the sinking of the Titanic.

One thing I knew was that every time before I was on a boat of any kind (leisure travel to exotic resorts Puffin Island off the coast of Anglesey, etc.) that I was violently seasick .

It is therefore with some trepidation that I arrived with my wife in Dover to start our journey of discovery.

This should be a cruise of seven days to the Norwegian fjords visiting places such as Bergen, Alesund, Flam and Stavanger. And I must say, he made an excellent start.

As we arrived at the cruise terminal we were greeted at the car by the helpful staff who removed our luggage and showed us exactly where to park.

After a security check very quickly, we walked on board for a great lunch before going on the promenade deck to watch the White Cliffs spinning as we headed out to sea.Meanwhile, our luggage was delivered efficiently to our room.

All a very pleasant experience compared to being cooped up in airports by the unfriendly, the staff informally that look like they are auditioning for the role of guardians in the Prisoner Cell Block H, and hauling your own bags around.

The MS Ryndam carries 1260 passengers and 550 crew and the ship is not huge compared with leviathans like the Queen Mary, but it seemed huge to me - as some large floating hotel.

At times it was hard to believe that you were on a ship until you went to your cabin and saw the great waves of the North Sea to roll your window - very strange the first time you see!

What is nice is that our car was ready when we boarded, unlike many of the hotels, if you arrive before 15 hours, they look at you as if you lost the right when you get the key to your room.
