Teacher Mary has the time of her life as Model County Rose

' IT WAS AN absolutely amazing experience,' beamed Wexford Rose Mary Kehoe while reflecting on her whirlwind time in Tralee.

Stepping out as the first ever Wexford Rose, Mary Kehoe was one of the bookies favourites to win the world-renowned contest.

As Mary was interviewed by RTE's Dáithí O Sé, an international television audience looked on as spoke about her close knit family, her college education and winning silver at the recent European Club Softball Championships in the Czech Republic, before she showed The Dome a hole in her leg!

However, it was her poignant party piece - a recitation of a poem penned by her father in 1950 when he was aged 17 years - that many will remember. Entitled ' My Day Dream in the Cow House', her father James wrote the poem for his sister Maura, who had left home.

Many years on Maura still treasured the poem and as a birthday gift for James framed it and presented it to him.

'I was delighted with my stage interview. I came off the stage really happy. Dáithí was great, he makes you feel so relaxed. I just wanted to do my county and my family proud,' said Mary, who hails from Pallas West.

' Before I went on stage I was and I wasn't nervous, I was excited about going out.

' There wasn't just my family in the audience cheering me on, you get to know the other girls' families and they are also so excited for you,' she added.

For Mary the Rose of Tralee also doubled as a wonderful family reunion.

The youngest of James and Mary Kehoe's eleven children, Mary was cheered on from the audience by her large family, some of whole travelled home from Boston and Cyprus.

'My family absolutely loved it and it was nice to get everyone together,' said the 26year-old.

Mary enjoyed what only could be described as a hectic social week in the lead up to the festival as she embarked on the Rose Tour.

During the week she visited Dail Eireann, the National Museum, the Guinness Storehouse and Crumlin Children's Hospital before heading onto Athy, Birr, Ballinasloe and Limerick, where she was introduced to her escort Richie Lynch before heading onto the Cliffs of Moher and Muckross House before arriving in Tralee on the Friday to meet her family.

Society | The 'States' fixation
