AUBURNDALE - Auburndale police Officer Stacy Lee Booth remained in critical but stable condition Sunday evening as she awaits further surgeries, Auburndale police said.
Booth was shot three times Friday while responding to a domestic violence call.
Auburndale police Lt. Thrasey Tucker said he didn't know the specifics of the surgeries that Booth will undergo.
On Facebook, several people from Polk County changed their profile photo to a candle as a symbol of praying for Booth's recovery.
Michael W. Lester, the man accused of shooting at the officer more than 20 times, had his first court appearance in Bartow on Sunday morning.
Lester, 36, bruised and handcuffed, stood in front of Polk County Judge Mary Catherine Green, who ordered that Lester remain in jail without bond.
Lester, who didn't say anything in court on Sunday, will be assigned a public defender.
He faces charges of four counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, one count of possession of firearm while engaged in a felony, one count of shooting within a dwelling, one count of aggravated battery and one count of resisting arrest with violence.
Lake Wales Library hosts fiber arts classes
The Lake Wales Public Library will host two three-week fiber arts classes, Beginner's Knitting and Beginner's Crochet. These classes begin Friday, Sept. 9, 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the library's main lobby area. The classes will run simultaneously each Friday evening through Sept. 23.
There are a limited number of seats available in each class.
Knitter Stephanie Carcano, will lead the Beginner's Knitting Class. Students will learn the basics of knitting including casting on and off, basic stitches, increasing and decreasing and a basic project.
Library staff member Dawn Copple will teach the Beginner's Crochet Class. Students in the Crochet Class will learn basic crochet stitches, increasing and decreasing, pattern definitions and a beginner's project.
