Dental care after wisdom tooth extraction? (10 points)? | Teeth Care ...
I had received a brochure with instructions on aftercare, but nowhere did it say not to swish, smoke, suck or anything along those lines. I have done all these things. All it says is to keep the area clean, rinse with saline solution, and after 24 hours to start using the irrigation syringe I have received. The instruction says to insert the syringe aprox. 2cm into the wound and clean it with warm saline solution at least several times a day. Also to wash my mouth with Chloorhexidine 0.2% several times a day.
Now this all seems rather comprehensive, and seems to put no restriction on what I eat, if I should smoke, and other factors that are clearly indicated by many other dental specialists to avoid complications. I have been smoking, but whilst doing so I have placed a gauze directly on top of the wound and biting down onto it covering it completely.
I need some comprehensive information from someone knowledgeable in the field. What are the chances of me getting dry socket? Should I continue following my seemingly lacking dentist’s instructions, or go with more generalized guidelines? Is the syringe good or bad? Mouthwash or not?
The dentist’s field of practice seems very divided on the subject, so no matter how much I read into the subject, I simply come across more different guidelines and opinions. I need someone with EXPERIENCE. Thank you.
Icy I had all four of mine removed on friday.
First of all, you shouldn’t be smoking, period.
You should only be eating soft food, and rinsing after with luke warm salt water. Brush your teeth as best you can and rinse with mouthwash. The syringe is for cleaning the sockets, i was told to only use it after 5 the 5th day.
My dentist gave me orders (analgesics and antiflamitioy (sorry not sure of the spelling) tablets that im never taking 6 hours).
Good luck and quit.
Clare - if you are worried about the bleeding contact with the hospital / dentist.
