Rivals bemoan loss of Labour Day classic

Mike O’Shea remembers the buzz in Hamilton leading up to the Labour Day game against the Toronto Argonauts each year.

As a Hamilton Tiger-Cat back then, people would stop him around town all week, firing him up for a hometown win. When he played for the Argonauts, he revelled in the other side of the rivalry, being showered with incessant boos and projectiles at Ivor Wynne Stadium.

But the Labour Day matchup that has fostered mutual distaste between Argos and Ticats fans has halted, likely just for one season. Dictated by limited dates for home games at the Rogers Centre this season, Toronto will play host to the B.C. Lions instead on Friday, while the Montreal Alouettes will visit Hamilton on Monday.

Now the special-teams co-ordinator for the Argos, O’Shea has to be honest. He’s not really that broken up about it.

“I personally have a lot of great memories of those Labour Day games, but as a coach, I don’t even know the date,” O’Shea said. “I’m so wrapped up in beating B.C., it doesn’t really matter to me right now. We have a lot of young players on our team, guys who haven’t participated in many Labour Day games there and don’t feel the history of it yet.”

If you think owner David Braley pushed to break up the Battle of Ontario on Labour Day to have both of his teams meet on the big weekend, think again. He says he likes the traditional matchups.

“I think the Labour Day classic is a terrific vehicle, and second to the Grey Cup, the Labour Day weekend games have been the highlight of the season,” Braley said. “But as a Toronto owner, I don’t think it should be in Hamilton every year. It should be there one year and in Toronto the next year.”

To some, the suggestion of playing that game outside Hamilton just wouldn’t feel the same.

“No, we tried to play it one time in Toronto, and I liked the flavour of the game in Hamilton better,” O’Shea said. “It’s a Hamilton thing.
