HORMONE HOPE IN OBESITY FIGHT
People have been found to become resistant to a hormone as they get fatter. The hormone, leptin, switches off the appetite to help control weight. But the bodys response to it is diminished in obese people a concept known as leptin resistance.
Now scientists at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, along with American colleagues, have discovered how this resistance develops.
Two proteins are known to inhibit leptin in the brain and now a third has been identified, which increases with weight gain, aggravates leptin resistance and hastens obesity.
The study sheds light on how the three take effect at different stages.
Professor Tony Tiganis, lead author of the study, said: Drugs targeting one of the negative regulators are already in clinical trials for Type 2 diabetes. Our research shows that targeting only one wont be enough. The study, published in the journal Cell Metabolism, showed that weight gain from a high fat diet is largely prevented in mice when two of the negative regulators are neutralised.
Health Secretary Andrew Lansley announced this week that five billion calories a day must be slashed from the nations diet to tackle obesity.
