SALISBURY— Eight days after losing phone service for his business, the CEO for Cambridgeport Air Systems is astonished that in an era when telecommunications technology is improving daily by leaps and bounds, it took technicians from two companies eight days to address the problem.

Cambridgeport's 24 voice and data lines went down Aug. 16, leaving the company that funnels as many as 300 customer calls a day without the communications methods it relies on to conduct business, CEO Jim McEleney said.

Located in the Salisbury industrial park at 8 Fanaras Drive, Cambridgeport's 150,000-square-foot facility manufactures and provides accessories for heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems to major national companies.

McEleney said the lack of service for more than a week has not only been a source of dismay and frustration, but it is impacting his business.

"Ninety percent of our orders come via faxes, and our fax lines are down, too," McEleney said yesterday. "If it weren't for cellphones and the Internet, we'd be dead in the water."

As is the case with many companies, Verizon provides the exterior lines that bring phone service to Cambridgeport's facility. But another company, Earthlink, provides the equipment necessary to convert and deliver the dial tone to the business' internal telephone system.

McEleney said he was told by Verizon that Cambridgeport isn't a "direct customer" and that he had to call Earthlink. So he spent eight days calling Earthlink almost hourly. Yet as of early yesterday afternoon, not only was the problem not resolved, but McEleney still didn't know exactly what the issue was.

As McEleney waited for answers, an emergency notice on Cambridgeport's website alerted customers to the lack of phone service.

During the outage, McEleney had Earthlink reroute two of his voice lines to a cellphone.
