Dan Shonka Part IV: Prospects Past and Present « The Rookie ...

I think it's fair to describe Ourlads' Dan Shonk as one of the last practitioners of the evaluation of football. Shonk has 39 years experience as a football player, college recruiting, college coaches, and 16 years of combined NFL as a scout for the national Scout, the Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins and the Chiefs Kansas City.

Last week, Shonk agreed to talk with me about scouting, players and the NFL. The planned 60 minutes became two hours talk football flew by.Dan was afraid that I am more than I negotiated, but I told him that I am exactly what I wanted - a little more than I expected.

In this segment of the conversation, talking about the prospects of pro Shonk past and present, including two players he thought was a big went wrong, a runner sneaky there good and all love Wes Bunting two, and taking on Andrew Luck.

Waldman: I talked to Chad Reuter and Wes Bunting of the players in the league, now or in the past made their expectations. Reuter mentioned Marcus McNeill exceeded expectations.Bunting said Aaron Maybin made in his expectations and he learned a great lesson on the assessment defensive ends as a result.

Bunting said he gained knowledge that a defensive end needs this "off-speed pitch" in their arsenal to fool the linemen. Is there any NFL players in recent years that surprised you with their performance in the game college?

Shonk: To reach Maybin First, we gave him a note of the third round because he only played eight games and had everything in my mind is working against him. It was the same size as the KGB up in Green Bay was a fifth-round pick.I gave him a note of the third round and was probably too high. But you know what? We were also one of the few who liked Marcus McNeill.

But a guy who was a disappointment for me and this could be for many reasons and I saw his very very best in bowl games and I still remember the day I was at Arizona State and watched Oregon play. Joey Harrington could throw the ball and he was damn smart.
