SYNERGIES - news from the College of Public Health & Human ...

Over the last 20 years, the stuff that’s classified as recyclable has changed…and so has the ingenuity and creativity of students across campus.  The 20th annual Recycled Fashion Show, held on February 25th to a packed crowd in the MU Ballroom featured extraordinarily innovative designs of 25 students including a sundress made from an old OSU banner that hung on campus; a cocktail dress made from broken umbrellas; a men’s jacket made from an old army blanket (including old bullet cases as buttons); a baby’s diaper cover, shirt, and leggings made from worn-out OSU t-shirts; an evening gown made from used OSU parking tickets; and a wedding dress made from used dryer sheets folded using an origami technique.

Each designer had a spending limit of $5 per garment and each paid $5 to enter the show, fees that went to renting the ballroom so students could get in free.  According to Emily Schroder, president of the student OSU Fashion Organization, “The show was an excellent opportunity for students in all fields to display their creativity, as well as for our organization to promote sustainable fashion. As the green movement continues to gain momentum, our apparel and merchandising industry is becoming increasingly aware as well. The OSU Fashion Organization and 208 Graphic Design put together this show with this movement in mind, using recycled programs, recycled decorations, and of course, recycled garments. We are confident this innovative and entertaining tradition will stay alive for another 20 years!”

Faculty member and club advisor Mary Pedersen said, “I am especially proud of our OSU Fashion Organization officers and members!  This year they were committed to planning and presenting the ‘greatest show ever’ and in doing so they undertook numerous additional tasks and responsibilities.  One additional contribution came from collaboration with the graphic design students who organized a reception held in Fairbanks Gallery following the show.
