At New Boardwalk Store, Finnish-American Owners 'Happy' to Sell American

Lucky for the owners of Onni that one of them is of Finnish descent. If Kathy Settelen’s ancestors had been born west of Finland in Sweden or north in Norway, she and her husband, John, would have been faced with the prospect of naming their gift and clothing store Lycka or Lykke. Neither sounds as intriguing and inviting as Onni.

"We wanted a name where people would ask what it meant,” says John Settelen, who answers that question on a fairly regular basis at 1356 Boardwalk, where Onni opened in April. “Onni means happiness or luck in Finnish, and Kathy is Finnish-American. Our daughter, Kelly, wanted to call the store Happiness and focus on junior clothing. We made it broader, more inclusive, where we have something for everyone.”

John, who for three decades was an executive in the energy and utility industries, and Kathy, a former respiratory therapist, celebrated their 25 wedding anniversary last year with a Mediterranean cruise and the opening of their first Onni store in Stone Harbor.

That Onni is located within Stone Harbor’s shopping district. The second Onni is located on the Boardwalk, as opposed to Ocean City’s shopping district on Asbury Avenue, because, Kathy says, “People are always on the Boardwalk, even in cold weather, even in the snow.”

Though John describes Onni as “primarily a seasonal store providing gifts, clothing, accessories, jewelry and home décor,” it is the Settelens’ intention to remain open through the end of the year.

Many customers of Onni remark on the uniqueness of the products sold there. Much of what Onni carries is made in America, which appeals to customers in these politically volatile times.

Among the products at Onni are Whisper Hill soy candles and body lotions from Vermont, coffee mugs stamped Ocean City from Great Bay Pottery in New Hampshire, ceramic fish wall hangings from Albatross in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Primal Elements handmade soap and candles from California, Marushka and icantoo clothing lines manufactured in the USA, and food products – jams, dips and nuts – from Maine, Ohio and Virginia, respectively.
