Write a one-act play during a five-week course

In recent years the River City Playhouse in Ilwaco, Wash., the Hannan Theater in Raymond, Wash., and the Astor Street Opry Company in Astoria have all solicited plays from local talent for their one-act festivals.

Bono has had great success writing her own one-acts. In 2009 she won first and second place in the Willapa Players' contest and both plays were produced as a result. The Peninsula Players have also performed three of her plays in the past three years.

"And the first two weeks of December," said Bono, "the holiday production at the River City Playhouse will be a trilogy of my Christmas one-acts. I am really, really, happy about that."

One-act plays are traditionally performed in 20 to 45 minutes. They have only one setting and a limited number of characters, usually three or four, and seldom more than eight. The challenge is to develop a complete and believable story and then be able to resolve the story conflict in just 15 to 35 pages of script.

"It's all carried by the dialogue," said Bono. "Sometimes when I'm working on a play I wake up in the middle of the night and have to turn on the light to jot down a great line for one of my characters. You end up living and breathing with your imaginary friends for awhile."

"One-acts are always a lot of fun to write," said Bono, who says her forte is writing comedies. "Writing something that gets a good laugh from the audience gives me such a huge rush. It's addictive!"

Bono's writing credentials are extensive. She's had several short story collections published, two poetry chapbooks, and 12 stories were accepted for the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series this year. Her first novel, a cozy mystery set on the Long Beach Peninsula, is currently seeking an agent.

The playwriting class will run from 6 to 8 p.m. five consecutive Monday nights, beginning Sept. 19. The cost is $95. Space is limited to assure individual attention. Call Bono now at (360) 642-4932 to register, or contact her through her website at janbonobooks.
