2011 Kia Optima Hybrid Full Test

Let's back up a bit. This is Kia's first-ever hybrid, and under the skin it's virtually a clone of its kissing cousin the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. There's a 2.4-liter four-cylinder gas engine that's backed by a conventional six-speed automatic gearbox and a 40-horsepower electric motor fed by a state-of-the-art lithium-polymer battery pack.

The tricky bit is that the transmission's torque converter has been binned in favor of a clever electronically controlled clutch pack, a change that enables the engine to be coupled or decoupled from the propulsive ballet. Gory details of the system can be gleaned from our First Drive of the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid .

First-Time Hybrid, and It Shows Kia's hybrid approach is slightly different from its competitors, but the upshot is similar — it'll run in pure EV mode during low-demand driving, and once the battery runs down, a gas engine jumps in to do the heavy lifting.

The Optima's EV mode is predictably silent and can be maintained if you treat the throttle as if there's an egg between it and your foot. Drive it like a normal car and the gas engine comes into play with regularity, and it doesn't thrum to life as seamlessly as we've come to expect from modern hybrids. There's also a mild yet constant surging during part-throttle acceleration.

Another of the Optima's peculiarities is its reluctance to respond to prods of the throttle, as if your request for torque has to be faxed to a committee of powertrain engineers in Korea before being granted. What's more, the throttle calibration defaults to "Eco" mode, which does nothing but further deaden throttle tip-in. That's the last thing this powertrain needs.

Kia is on the money in its philosophy that sequential gearchanges are more intuitive than the stretch-forever nature of continuously variable transmissions. But you can forget about commanding your own downshifts in the Manual mode of this hybrid's transmission. It responds so excruciatingly slowly that you can time its gearchanges with a calendar.

Still, there's clearly room for improvement before the Optima Hybrid exhibits the level of powertrain refinement found in the Fusion, Altima or Camry hybrids. Full-bore acceleration is perhaps lower on the list of priorities among hybrid buyers than

2000–2001 Toyota Camry & Solara (5S–Fe) M.I.L. On Dtc P0300 ...

Introduction Applicable Vehicles Under certain conditions, some 2000 and 2001 model year 5S–FE equipped Camry and Solara vehicles may exhibit a M.I.L. “ON” with DTC P0300 (Random Multiple Cylinder Misfire). These vehicles may also exhibit a hard–to–start, start and stall, or rough idle condition when cold. The Engine Control Module (ECM) logic (SAE term: Powertrain Control Module/PCM) has been modified and a series of key component tests have been established to correct this condition. 2000 model year Camry and Solara vehicles equipped with 5S–FE engine and California emissions specification. 2001 model year Camry and Solara vehicles equipped with 5S–FE engine and either California emissions or Federal emissions specification. Repair Procedure

STEP 1: Disconnect the negative battery terminal. STEP 2: Remove and replace the ECM (PCM) per instructions in the 2001 Camry Repair Manual, Pub. No. RM819U, Volume 2, page SF–64, or the Solara Repair Manual, Pub. No. RM834U2, page SF–61. STEP 3: 1. Connect a hand–held vacuum pump to the throttle opener and apply vacuum. 2. Verify that the throttle lever contacts the throttle stop screw with no clearance between the two as shown in the diagram in the 2001 Camry Repair Manual, Pub. No. RM819U, Volume 2, on page SF–33, or the Solara Repair Manual, Pub. No. RM834U2, page SF–30. 3. Then verify that the accelerator cable, from the accelerator pedal or from the cruise control unit, is not overly tight at the throttle body adjustment.

4. Once you have finished this inspection and adjustment verify that the throttle can achieve a fully open position. STEP 4: 1. Remove and inspect all spark plugs for carbon fouling. If the plugs are fouled, replace them. 2. Remove and inspect all 4 fuel injectors. If any injector has a stain or discoloration on the tip, replace all 4 injectors. Fuel injector removal and installation instructions can be found in the 2001 Camry Repair Manual, Pub. No. RM819U, Volume 2, on pages SF–22 and SF–25, respectively, or the Solara Repair Manual, Pub. No. RM834U2, pages SF–18 and SF–22. 3. Install and torque all spark plugs. 4. Add one can of Fuel Injector Cleaner P/N 08813–00080 into the fuel tank. STEP 5: Replace the negative battery cable and tighten. Start and drive the vehicle at least 30 minutes at 60 miles per hour to facilitate the removal of carbon. Then restart and drive the vehicle at least one more time to verify proper operation of all components and correction of the M.I.L. “ON” condition.
