Weekend wildfire burns 1445 acres
Fanned by high winds and fed by parched vegetation, a wildfire at Camp Swift started Friday afternoon and quickly spread north, threatening homes and demanding a massive response from area firefighters.
The blaze started Friday at about 4 p.m. and burned 1,455 acres by Monday, Aug. 8, when it was reportedly 95 percent contained. The fire did not spread outside Camp Swift except for 30 acres to the north of the base. No homes or military equipment were damaged.
U.S. 290 was closed Friday night from 9 p.m. till about 1 a.m. from FM 696 east to McDade due to low visibility from the heavy smoke. The fire was stopped about 500 yards to the west. Several homes were threatened, but none were lost to the fire.
The Texas Forest Service brought a helicopter from Fredericksburg on Friday to drop water on the fire and four single-engine air tankers carrying fire retardants.
On Saturday, the National Guard brought in Blackhawk helicopters, airlifting water from a pond near U.S. 290.
According to Lexi Maxwell of the Texas Forest Service, a crew of National Guard soldiers was cleaning up a training site when the fire started. The exact cause is still under investigation, but there was no formal training exercise involving ammunition that could have caused it, she said.
The fire began on the east side of the Camp Swift property and spread north-northwest. It came close to Little McAcres near McDade, but grazed the subdivision to the west.
The fire then approached a group of homes on U.S. 290, including three homes and some outbuildings. Residents evacuated voluntarily.
Numerous agencies responded to the fire, including the Texas Forest Service, the Texas Army National Guard, the Federal Corrections Institute, Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office, the Bastrop County Office of Emergency Management and fire departments from Elgin, McDade, Paige, Bastrop, Smithville, Five Points, Bluebonnet and Blue. A task force of six fire departments from Williamson County also took part.
