Francell Stout was hiding a lot more than her real name when she hired on as “Annette,” a member of the Kitten Club that helped popularize the Morton House in downtown Grand Rapids during the 1960s.

She was fudging her real age in an effort to get a job there, posing as someone no older than 26 when in truth she was 37.

But that’s not all. She also kept a lid on the fact that she was the mother of nine kids, ages 2-14.

By day, she was a suburban wife and homemaker, sending the older children off to Northview Schools with bag lunches and a kiss on the cheek. But after dark, she donned an outfit that closely resembled “bunnies” employed by Hugh Hefner’s burgeoning Playboy Clubs, and served dinner and drinks to patrons of what once was a Grand Rapids institution.

Francell died this past June at the age of 83. And you and I might never have known of her existence if her son Bob, 55, hadn’t read of drastic changes affecting the Morton House these days, then decided to re-tell his mother’s story.

Her days as a skimpily clad cocktail waitress made international news back in 1965, when a Press story unveiling her secrets was picked up by United Press International and shared with newspapers worldwide.

But that was nearly half a century ago, and you’d have to be well into your 50s or 60s to recall the story, or the images that accompanied the tale, and that appear here again.

“She was quite a lady,” says Bob, noting that given the roles his mother assumed as she made her way through life, “it could really play out as a movie script.”

Francell, who eventually had a 10th child by her second husband, grew up in the Dearborn area and graduated in 1947 from Sacred Heart Catholic High School there. She made her way to West Michigan, married a truck driver named Orville, and raised nine kids in the Northview district.

She attended a modeling school, and used it to her advantage to help push refrigerators. But when Orville needed back surgery, money got tight, and she needed to pick up some more hours.
