Ridge HS Marching Band Ramps Up for Season of Football, Competitions
Ridge High School band director Dan Zugale compared the physical and musical workouts of the Ridge High School marching band to the those of the more intense athletic teams. "We are doing full double sessions going from 8:15 a.m. until 8:30 p.m., five days a week," said Zugale.
Dan Zugale is in his third year as the band director. "I really have to say it has been an easy transition. The parents have been great and help so much with the competitions and in every one of our events. They are almost part of the band and their efforts directly effect the kids," said Zugale.
"This is really a team effort. The football and cheerleading squads and their parents all pitch in to work with us at the games and the competition. It is a really great feeling of community," Zugale added.
The band graduated 19 students in 2011, but 26 new members have joined the squad to bring the total number to 66 for this year.
"I hope we can keep growing. It is important to have a bigger band when you are playing in a football stadium with over 1,000 fans," Zugale said.
Last year, the high school marching band tallied up a stellar competition season. "We did place well, 1st and 2nd, in competitions last year and I think it helps bring us interested students wanting to compete on a high level," Zugale said.
Last year, the band won the Yamaha Cup at the new Giant's stadium. "Not only did we win, but we took nearly every special award in the event," Zugale went on to say. "We also came in third in the New Jersey state competition."
Performance
This season the band will be performing music from the "Lion King" and they are working on a field routine that will correspond with the music.

However, instead of football, the fans in attendance were there to witness the championship competition for Drum Corps International, the Super Bowl of marching music. And when The Cadets – a drum corps based in Allentown, Pa.
In high school, he was a member of a state champion Group 4 marching band and performed in as many music groups as he could — concert band, jazz band, percussion ensemble, etc. He won the faculty's Grand Staff Ensemble scholarship.
